World Social Work Day was celebrated by the Association of Medical Social Workers of Nigeria on 15th, 16th and 17th March, 2016. This year, we raised awareness of what social workers do to address the problems in society especially in the health sector. The theme for this years World Social Work Day was 'Promoting the dignity and worth of peoples', which has been derived from the Global Agenda for Social Work and Social Development, led by the three international social work organizations of social work practitioners and educators IFSW, IASSW,& ICSW. We celebrated the WSWD 2016 through array of activities. On 15th and 16th March, 2016 we held a live phone-in programme on both local and national radio stations i.e Splash FM, Fresh FM and Radio Nigeria, Ibadan Network State, the general public were allowed call and ask questions about the activities of Social Workers in Nigeria and all over the world. On the 17th March, 2016, we had dignity walk round major areas in Ibadan and then converge at the office of the Chief Medical Director of the first teaching hospital in Nigeria, University College Hospital, Ibadan. He commended the works of medical social workers in the hospital as indispensable to care and management of patients in the hospital. He also called on all government and non-governmental organizations to embrace the activities of medical social workers towards fulfillment of mandate of the current government. The association donated a trolley to the hospital to support patients care, this was received by the Chief Medical Director. On the same day, were had short lecture by the Head, Medical Social Services Department titled: Promotion of dignity and worth of every patients presented in the hospital without discrimination and stigmatization. The presenter advocated for improved care and support for the two extreme populations which are children and elderly.We planned tweetconference on Thursday, 17th March, 2016. However, we were unable to do it due to some logistic reasons. The purpose of the tweetconference was to avail all practicing Social Workers all over the world to have a live chat with the Secretary-General of International Federation of Social Workers and also chat with other practicing Social Workers in the rest of the world. Hopefully, in 2017 we will be able to host the Secretary General of the International Federation of Social Workers and other international social workers around world.
