Social Service Worker Profile: Clemence Machingauta

Clemence Machingauta

Medical Psychiatry Social Worker, Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe Social WorkerOverview of role

My primary role as a medical social worker is to deal with any vulnerabilities associated with illnesses. Children are referred to me for different reasons. Some are abandoned, some neglected, some abused, and some are generally vulnerable. My role is to make sure their needs are met in a timely manner. Adults constitute the bulk of my clients. Many who visit my department are looking for financial assistance. We often refer them to the Department of Labour and Social Development who have a budget for vulnerable and sick individuals. Some adults also get admitted as destitute. For these individuals, our role is to trace relatives for possible reunification. If no relative has been identified these adults may be placed into homes. Families are always engaged when managing chronic and other complicated conditions. The reason for the engagement is to educate family members on how to support the admitted patient on drug adherence, management options and rehabilitation depending on the case.

I believe that, through the work of my department, every child is placed in a place of safety, be it with extended family, community members or foster care. Through education on parenting, the home environment is also improved and made safer for children. Also, children and adults can access affordable health care.

Motivation

I have always had a passion for helping the vulnerable. I felt working in a health facility would provide an opportunity for me to have the most impact on the lives of people.

Training/education

I have a degree in social work and have also been trained on social work methods and palliative care.

Importance of social workers in health facilities

There are a lot of people who need assistance in health care facilities and hospital systems, which may feel like unfriendly places to some individuals. Having social workers in health facilities makes it easier for them to access care. Without additional support, some individuals may fail to access care at all.
